Exxon's profit should already be part of the retail price so adding 16.9 % onto the gas price is not correct. Rather the new actual price to Exxon for the gas is $3.14 / 1.169 = $2.68 and so its real profit per gallon is 3.14 -2.68 = $0.45 not $0.52. This however just adds more emphasis to your argument.
