So here's the thing. Freedom of Speech is power. But so is money.
I could philosophically debate which is more powerful and how our history has shown this or that or blah blah yada yada cue Charlie Brown's teacher in the background, but I won't. Why?
Because speaking up for someone who cannot speak for themselves is more important than either.
I'd send you directly to the article online that spews hate towards a mentally disabled child, but they do not deserve the views that pay for their pitiful existence. Instead, please click HERE for screen prints by the brilliant Dana Loesch of the disgusting blog and editor/reader comments. You can also read more banter between Mediaite and the W*nkette Editor HERE.
Let's not google their name and give them any justice of direct website hits. Nor will we accept the pansy "apology" that came out late Wednesday evening from the author. Or again Thursday afternoon in a half-slap yeah sure shut up whatever way.
And there it is. Freedom of Speech in all it's vitriol hurtful despicable glory. Yes, our country was founded on the principles of having the right to voice our opinions, but this is just detestable. Period. No child - regardless of their parent's political affiliation - should be discussed in any way. They are off limits. Always. So, get a grip, Mister Let Me Make Fun Of A Disabled Child Because It Makes Me Feel Better. Dude. You're doing it wrong.
Here's the money is power part. I took it upon myself to call a few of the advertisers just to let them know where their ad was prominently shown and how I perceived this as a consumer. As a mother. As a human being. They were very quick to begin investigations and the ball is now rolling.
Was it my intention to have advertisers consider pulling ads? No.
Papa John's did it almost immediately from a single tweet by another concerned American. Then Huggies. Now Avis, Lennar Coastal of CA, FedEx, Hyundai Mall of GA (Auto Nation), Pottery Barn (Williams-Sonoma), Kodak Gallery, Celebrity Cruises/Royal Caribbean, HP, Amway, JosA Bank, Fetchback, Dominos, Kaiser Permanente, Sheraton Hotels, Dish Network, AT&T, Lifelock, Gymboree, Yoplait, Ann Taylor, Coca Cola, eBags, Adobe, Toyota, Ford, Jimmy Johns, Whataburger, Betty Crocker, Finish Line, Vanguard, Coldwater Creek, Bob Evans Farms, Holland American Cruise Line, Reliant Energy, REI, Verizon, TMobile, Starwood, Dodge/Ram, Hyatt, QVC, Choice Hotels, Express, JJill, Nordstroms, Starkist Charlie, Deal Swarm, Coldwell Banker, State Farm and the Texas Education Agency all have too! Colonial Williamsburg has blacklisted the website which shall not be named for their vile commentary. Will more follow?
The power is inevitably with the people, my friends. Because WE hold the purse strings that keeps them in business and I'm certain there are competitors out there who do NOT support the hateful rhetoric placed towards a mentally disabled child ... or ANY child for that matter.

(ht @17seventy6 aka Thomas Jefferson for getting all the numbers!)
I cannot stress enough that when you contact these companies, please be respectful. Mocking disabled children is hateful and we do not want to fall into that category by stooping to the level of the website that shall not be named. Simply present the facts and let said company make their decision from there.
After all, this is America and they are free to advertise where they wish. Please note that some of the companies may not even know their ad was on the website that shall not be named. Many use outside ad agencies for their marketing. Once the company completes their investigation and should they decide to continue to support the website that shall not be named, we as consumers also have a choice: to take our business elsewhere.
And I will.

ReplyDeleteI saw a Dunkin Donuts banner and contact them as well. The comments are truly disturbing. Disgusting.
ReplyDeleteGrand Canyon Railroad as well.
ReplyDeleteI called Ann Taylor, JJill and QVC. Ann Taylor has several programs specifically geared towards helping women & children, JJill has a compassion program for women who neeed help.
ReplyDeleteJoan Sherrard
Good work, ma'am. I'll join in speaking up for decency and Freedoms fight against marxist scalawags. I'm sure those with me will join in as well. we do like a dust up, whenever there are marxist noggins to clout.
ReplyDeleteBest regards,
BadCat
It's fun to fight like a girl. I grew up as one of 3 girls. I know how to do it and so do you, sistah!
ReplyDeleteAdd Toyota to the list
ReplyDeleteThe one sponsor left that I can find is Grand Canyon Railway. www.thetrain.com They also have a Facebook page.
ReplyDeleteYou may want to consider contacting the ad networks that they contract with as well, which would be where the ads originate. I see two on their site - doubleclick.net and blogads.com
ReplyDeleteGrand Canyon Railway just sent me an email. They are pulling their ads!! Congrats!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info, Jennifer! YOU rock!
ReplyDeleteBob Evans Farms just sent me a tweet:
ReplyDeletehttp://twitter.com/BobEvansFarms/status/60886594789449729
Our ad is not supposed to be running on that site. Ad agency has been alerted to pull it immediately. Thank you.
I'm on it! Thank you so much for this blog! I'm retweeting and facebooking right now!
ReplyDeleteI thought Gawker ditched Wonkette a couple years ago. Not to defend Gawker, because its flagship site is vile too, but I think the two are separate entities.
ReplyDeleteHello, Ellen here. Please let me know if you have any additions, and hopefully subtractions to the Twitter list @_starstar
ReplyDeleteWill do, Ellen! Thanks for putting together the Twitter list! :)
ReplyDeleteNot a girl, but grew up with 3 sisters... Have 3 girls of my own now, and I know how to fight like one. Good job ladies! :D
ReplyDeleteExcellent Job, Meeshie. I am in awe of the power of twitter (and the people). I have never been so proud of my twitter family as I was yesterday. That precious baby is a beacon for all to see, and if he were my child, I would show him off for all the world to marvel. Sarah Palin has done more for Downs Syndrome awareness in the past 3 years than our society has in the past 30!
ReplyDeleteGreat job on this site. One thing...in your post above, you both list Reliant Energy and then praise them down near the bottom for stepping up. May need an update to the list. Thx.
ReplyDeletePer a tweet received from Dominos they are addressing it.

ReplyDeleteSome folks may give you the runaround but just keep at it if they can't help insist on getting a number of someone who will, the more who call the sooner they will react.
The first thing I saw on the Wonkette site was an add for a book called 31 Bond Street, published by HARPER COLLINS. I immediately emailed them requesting they pull the advertising. For some reason, I have not seen HARPER COLLINS mentioned in any lists of Wonkette advertisers.
ReplyDeleteWe added Harper to the list! Thanks for the heads up! We're on it! :)
ReplyDeleteWhat an inspiration you folks are! Thanks for all of your hard work!
ReplyDelete~~~Blessings~~~
Got an email from ebags.com telling me that they don't deal directly with xxx site but they would contact the agency that handles their advertising to remedy the situation.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info on eBags! I've tweeted props to them as have many others. Keep up the good work everyone! :)
ReplyDeleteColonial Williamsburg said yesterday that it had blacklisted Wonkette. @colonialwmsburg on Twitter
ReplyDeleteHere's one not on the list but that I saw on their site and contacted. I received this yesterday from Marriott's PR Director. Hope it helps your efforts.
ReplyDeleteGood afternoon and thank you for bringing the below to our attention.
We are looking into any advertising done on the below site and if you have a screen shot or copy of the Marriott Vacation Club ad please forward it on to me.
The story referenced in the link below is not consistent with Marriott or Marriott Vacation Club International’s corporate values and philosophy.
Thank you again and we are working to resolve this issue as soon as possible.
I have addressed my concern with Sprint, and waiting for a reply.
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone for your dedication and support! We're down to the home stretch and with the holiday weekend ahead of us, may not get the results we had the past 48 hours, but we'll get there! Keep posting here if you receive new info! God Bless!
ReplyDeleteNot surprised QVC stepped up to the plate. They are all about family and kids.
ReplyDeleteGot this from Avis:
ReplyDeleteThank you for contacting the E-mail Customer Service team.
The Avis ads have already been pulled from the Wonkette website.
Thank you again for taking the time to contact us. If we can be of
further assistance, please let us know.
Regards,
Tagi Jennings
